The Ghost of You....
=================
Gerard and the boys were coming home..Only on leave but still..Some time home was better than none.
The transport ship made port in Philly. He knew tomorrow the ship and all the guys on it would get to NYC..But Gerard didn't want to wait that long. He knew if he got on the train he'd be home tonight!
Home in time to surprise her.
They had been married less than a week when he'd had to ship out the last time. He'd been gone over a year, they'd missed their first set of holidays together. Gerard had written her in the beginning almost every day.
Her letters were never that frequent.
But when she did write...oh boy..he'd need a cold shower afterwards
or a some lonely corner somewhere, or he'd wait until he was SURE everyone else was asleep to read them..and then...
Gerard wasn't sure he loved her, but he SURE as hell missed her!
Now he was so close to being with her, and over the holidays no less, he just couldn't wait any more.
He turned to his REAL brother, as oppossed to all the other brothers in uniform he now had.
"I'm getting permission to leave Philly tonight by train and get home tonight..You wanna come with me..It'll be WAY faster?"
"Nah..I got at least three reasons to stay in Philly tonight.."
Ray rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah? What are their names?"
"Uh Philly let's see..." Mikes pulled out his little black book, and started thumbing through it. . "That's uh...Ivy.., Nancy, and Betty I think..? Or is it Veronica?"
"You know how many forms and releases and requistions you're gunna hafta fill out?" Frankie knew every road block in the system and every way around it.
"Sides! You'll miss the big welcome home celebrations." Bobby was looking forward to the confetti, he REALLY liked confetti. And to he was hoping he might find a nice girl to welcome him home.
"I play my cards right, tomorrow morning as you all are JUST making port, I'll be still be sleeping in her arms from all the welcome home 'celebrations' I'll be doin' with her tonight! AND I'll be 'celebratin' with her AGAIN before you see your first piece of confetti!"
He drummed on the rail as he had made up his mind.
With Frankie's help, he got all the forms and releases he needed. His travel papers and orders all ready. He said farewell to his friends, hugging his brother and closest friends goodbye.
"See ya's in NYC! Merry Christmas!" and he took off down the gang way.
The ride on his train was fairly comfortable and free. The uniform and the travel orders having been good for that.
He made it to Grand Central and could smell the mix of grime and glitter, of grease paint and trash, of hopeful wanna-be startlets, and broken down has-beens.
He could smell New York City.
He could almost smell home.
Well NYC had become his home. His new wife Jocyelyn prefered NYC over any place else. And that was good enough for him. Besides, Home, his real hometown wasn't that far away.
He got off the train and stepped onto the streets of New York. Even though it was getting kind of late there were still vendors outside. He bought a nice big wreath with a huge red satin bow, for their door..Tomorrow mabye he could go and get her a tree if she didn't already have one. He had his hazard pay AND his bonuses for courage under the line of fire..He was going to SPOIL her something fierce.
Gee muttered to himself happily.
"Santa will be good to you this year Jos, all ya gotta do is sit on my lap and tell me what ya want."
Damn but he was anxious to see her.
He thought of Jocelyn. Would she be as happy and excited to see him as he was to see her?
He hadn't let on to the boys that he had begun to have his doubts. He had made all sorts of excuses for the letters she didn't
send. The packages that ONLY came from mom.
He had begun to wonder too how he felt about her. While sometimes the old saying "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" held true, sometimes also "Out of sight, out of mind " did too.
But now as he got closer to home he had a feeling that tonight would change every thing.
It was few days till Christmas and now the snow had begun to fall.
He'd have a white christmas with his girl, sorry, Wife, and everything would work out the way it was suppoosed to.
Gerard got to his apartment building and reached into his coat for his key. He was hoping what he'd told the boys would be true..That he and his wife would be celebrating all night long.
Maybe they'd find a way to be happy together, some common ground.
He slid the key softly into the door. He KNEW it was late and he didn't want to wake her. But then again he thought, as he put down his duffle and took off his hat and placed it carefully on
the table by the door,
"Maybe I should call out to her, I don't want scare her." He called out to her as he walked into the bedroom.
" Oh Mrs. WAY? Jocelyn honey? I'm home! Your-"
Gerard couldn't believe his eyes.

"Maybe I should call out to her, I don't want scare her." He called out to her as he walked into the bedroom.
"Mrs. WAY? Jocelyn honey? I'm home! Your-"
Gerard couldn't believe his eyes.
Gerard saw Jocelyn, his wife, cheating on him. Actually on TOP of another guy!
AND WITH The LIGHTS ON!
He was so stunned he dropped the wreath. He turned to leave, intending on not saying a word.
She ran after him, grabbing a short silk robe he had sent her.
He recognised it! HE had sent it to her and she was wearing it where that ..Bastard could see her! But then again OBVIOUSLY he had seen her in FAR LESS!
Jocyelyn stopped him "GEE I'm sorry I'm so, so, sorry! But I can't take the pressure of knowing whether or not you're ever comin' home."
"SO to relieve the pressure you thought you'd go and bang another guy..How Long JOS? How long have you been screwin'around on me? FUCK..I wrote you every damn day in the beginning! How could you do this to me?"
Gerard ran his hands through his hair..and began to pace, he wanted to punch ..something..and he wanted to KILL the Dick in the other room!
"YOU KNEW I was comin' home! I wrote to you about it every week since we got word we'd be home for Christmas! You KNEW..No WOULD have known how important that was to me if you even BOTHERED to read the letters!..
I HAD BEEN feeling guilty that we weren't..as close as I wanted us to be...But..I WAS hoping that once I got back here..we'd..we'd be able to ..I dunno find some common ground..And I THOUGHT you'd be happy to see me..I WAS hoping you'd welcome me with open arms!
Instead you welcomed him with open legs!"
THWAP!
Gerard felt her hand sting his cheek as she slapped him.
"How DARE you..you make me sound like some..whore!"
"No. Honey, Whores work for their money....A two bit gutter snipe like yourself does it just for fun! I knew you were easy when I met you..Hell it wasn't what the first two hours before you had your hand in my pants at the U.S.O.? I thought you were just..desperate to be loved..Not a cheap slut who just wants to mate!"
"It's not like that! He loves me! And He treats me VERY well..with him I have everything I want,,Can you give me that on a soldiers pay?..Besides I want someone who will be able to hold me at night with out waking up screaming like a little girl..I want a MAN! I Don't want you anymore!..I wanna be free!! Free to be spoiled by who ever I damn well please!"
Gerard saw the divorce papers, he pulled the fountain pen he always kept on him out of his dress uniform jacket, and started the ink flowing. The pen he had used to write home to her, practically ever day..., well in the beginning anyway...
He picked up the papers, "You want this so bad Jos Honey?!" he bent down and used the small side table, he scratched out his signature angrily, "There you go!" and THREW them at her.
"Goodbye Jocelyn..I don't hope you get what you want..I hope you get what you deserve." He angrily put his hat back on, picked up his duffle from where he had left it by the front door and left.
He wandered out into the night, not really sure where he was going.
It had started to snow. "Perfect!" he threw his hands up in disgust. He didn't want to get his DRESS uniform to get ruined. He ducked into the first all night diner he could find.
He walked in head hung low. He deposited his duffle in a corner and sat down at the counter. He took off his cap, brushing the snow off it and his shoulders.
Now what was he going to do? Three days before christmas and no where to go but Ma's..And then he'd have to explain about Jos...No, he really had no place to go.
A soft voice with a weird accent spoke.
"Can I get you somezing Sargent?"
"Just Bring me a coffee please..Black."
"Yes Sir and please take zis menu ..Soliders eat free here sir."
Gerard didn't feel like eating even though he knew it'd been hours since he had. He saw the edge of the menu that was being held out to him. He finally looked up as he consented to take it.
He looked up, his sad hazel eyes, looking into the kindest, big, bright blue eyes he'd ever seen.

Re: Ghost Of You
You don't wanna know how many times I am watching GoY over and over...
Gerard
He looked up, his sad hazel eyes, looking into the kindest, big, bright blue eyes he'd ever seen.
He was dumbstruck for just a moment. Those eyes seemed so warm and gentle.
"Excuse me? Sergeant?" she tilted her head to the side abit to look at the insignia on his bicep.
"It iz Sergeant iz it not? The coffee? You said Black yes?""
He found his voice. "Yes Mam. I did thank you." He tried to answer calmly. The poor girl in front of him wasn't Jocelyn.
In-fact from the looks of her, far from it.
She turned her back to him and reached for a coffee pot. The liquid was deep black/brown and it smelled rich. As she reached down for a mug to poor it into Gerard noticed that she modestly bent her legs at the knee rather then bending over at the waist provocatively , as Jos woulda done.
As turned back around to face him, the cup and saucer now in her hand, she had a soft smile on her face.
She was welcoming him..She was happy he was here.
'Course she is idiot' he thought to himself, 'You're a customer.'
"It iz, sorry iss, I am trying to rid myself of this accent. It IS an awful night to be out this late Sargent..w-WAY? Is that the correct way to say it?"
"Yes Mam. WAY simple straight and to the point. And yes..I wish I was almost anywhere else than here. No offence." He took a sip of the coffee, it helped to warm him.
Or maybe it was those kind eyes.
The coffee tasted fantastic.
"Okay..Maybe I should rephrase that I wish I had come here instead of going where I did."
"Oh.., was your homecoming not pleasant?"
He sighed deeply and he dropped his eyes from hers, couldn't stand to see the pity he KNEW was going to come into those eyes. "No, no Mam it wasn't."
"She...was not happi to see You? She is a damn foool!"
Gerard's eyes flew to her face. There was not a shred of pity, but there was anger.
"Does she not realiZe what you have been fighting for? Does she not realiZe the world is living in a hell of it's own making? And Zhat you and Valiant men like you are risking and giving their lives to preserve her way of life?"
an angry blush colored her cheeks and it gave her a rosy glow..Her eyes once bright and kind now looked quite fierce, and almost grey like a stormy sea.
A hint of a smile played at the corners of his mouth..He was still angry at Jocelyn, still trying to keep up his walls.
And yet here was a little, minx, spitting hellfire at a woman she had never met because she had perceived a slight by her against him.
"I..guess not. I mean..she was, well, how..how can I put this..she uh..Wasn't exactly expecting to see me, and then she wasn't very happy when she did.."
She stamped her foot and nodded her head once violently.
" I say again!DAMN FOOL! Well I am happy to see you soldier! I welcome you home!" she leaned over the counter and placed a quick peck on his cheek.
The spot tingled a bit as she pulled back. A puzzled look crossed her face.
"She didn't expect you? Was today not your home coming?"
He shook his head. "No Mam it wasn't..It was supposed to be tomorrow. I got permission to leave the ship in Philly and catch the train home early..I was hoping we'd..I..I don't know what I was hoping..When I married her..it was sorta just to BE married ya know..To feel like I had someone home waiting..I wrote her alot, well in the beginning I did..but after a while, when I wasn't getting very many at all in return.."
"AS I said she was a damn fool..Sorry I don't know many angry words in English..I have things I should not say in many languages..But I am still..expanding My vocabulary in American.."
Gerard laughed just the tiniest bit.
"American? we speak English here.."
"No you do not speak the same as a Brit..I know..I spent a bit of time there..as well as Holland, and Russia, Austria, a BIT of time in Spain, and of course France and Poland. My father's work required we.." he could see her searching for the right word..
"WE Move? Move I think, travel after him quiet often.."
His eyes lit up as he finally understood.
"That's why I couldn't pick out your accent! It's a mix of so many!"
"Yes I am, oh what is the word!?" She moved her hand in the air as she struggled to make her mouth and brain work together.
"UH! This SO frustrating!! Em-- embaressed? yes? By my accent..I am trying to..negate it..I do not wish to sound so much a foreigner. I love this country..Perhaps some day it will be my home. Now Philly? As in Philadelphia? And By train? You must be VERY hungry what can I pre-.. No.. Americanski.." she muttered reminding herself. "What can I get you? You must be starved."
He looked at her. She didn't pity him at all. Nor had she looked at him disapprovingly, when he had finally admitted out loud that he had jumped into this "marriage" for reasons other than love.
She didn't judge him and she seemed genuinely happy he was here in front of her in one piece.
"I wasn't hungry at all when I walked in..In-fact food was the farthest thing from my mind.. But suddenly Mam, I have an appetite again." he said with a bit of a smirk.
He looked down at the menu.."What's good?" He looked back up with a smile.
"Anything," she said with a slight toss of her hair.
"I am a VERY good cook!"
His smile broadened "I bet you are Miss..I bet you are."
"Anna. My name Sergeant is Anna." She held out her hand as if to shake his. He took it and gave it a small shake. He stood and introduced himself.
"Anna? My name is Gerard..And it's a REAL pleasure to meet you.. Now about that food..."
Gerard
He looked up, his sad hazel eyes, looking into the kindest, big, bright blue eyes he'd ever seen.
He was dumbstruck for just a moment. Those eyes seemed so warm and gentle.

I do believe that I like Anna already. Quite a bit, actually.
I admit, though, I couldn't help but read her dialogue out loud with the french accent:P

Re: Ghost Of You
( Well you both are not that far off Anna's accent is based on I VERY sweet lady I know from my church.
Her Name is Miss Myra pronounced M EERrrrrAh the r is rolled. She was a young woman when this story takes place. Her accent is a mix of polish and some french. The french LOVED the poles and to THIS day if you go to France and you say you are an American the will not do anything for you and May be even be ruder than normal to you..But say you POLISH you are treated like Royalty! And yes I can fake the accent enough to pass as been born in Poland.
She still has her numbers on her arm the Germans tattooed there when she was in a Camp.
Anna is trying TO LOSE her accent..that may or may not come in handy...)

Gerard
"Anna. My name Sergeant is Anna." She held out her hand as if to shake his. He took it and gave it a small shake. He stood and introduced himself.
"Anna? My name is Gerard..And it's a REAL pleasure to meet you.. Now about that food..."
He sat back down smiling. He loosened his tie and unbuttoned his jacket. "I am suddenly starving and this coffee! I haven't had a decent cup in..OH I DUNNO HOW long!! This is so good..I may have to drink the whole pot!" he smiled as she laughed softly at him and she blushed prettily.
"Did you make the coffee too Anna?"
She nodded shyly.
"Well then MY compliments! Tell me what is your specialty? I mean since this is my first meal home it SHOULD be a good one.."
Just then a broken down older man came into the diner. His coat had obviously seen better days and he was shivering. He walked with a limp. He sat down a few seats away from Gerard at the counter.
"One moment." Anna said to Gerard and walked down toward the new comer. "Coffee Jacques?"
The man looked embarrassed. "I ..I can't pay you today Anna.."
"That is NOT what I asked Jacques..you will when you can..Are you hungry?"
The man nodded now REALLY embarrassed. Just then he noticed Gerard looking at them.
"Evening Sarg..Glad you're home. I wish you were all home.."
"Thank you sir. I do too. But I'm just on leave. Home for the holidays and then back on a ship bound for England the day after the feast of the Epiphany. We leave at 06:00 on the morning of the 7th. I wasn't suppossed to be home till tomorrow, WE, my buddies and I, were very lucky..We got almost 18 days."
"Three Kings day? That's a sign boy..The kings wandered till the finally found what they we searching for..But they had a guiding star..That's what you need soldier a star to guide you home. I hope you find it."
"Thank you Sir. I do to." Gerard thought out loud, "That's what what I thought I had..someone to come home too... I guess I was wrong."
Anna could see him getting upset again and so she interjected.
"Jacques you can earn your meal today..That is if you are willing to do me a small favor, I should consider it payment."
Jacques' face lit up and he JUMPED at the chance.
"Sure Anna anything!"
"This young man hear has asked me what is the best item on the menu..I am no judge of my own food as you well know..Help him decide and I will take it as a review and then of course restaurant critiques MUST eat for free."
Gerard tried his hardest to hide his smile. He could see Anna was trying to give this man some dignity. The more Gerard saw of Anna the more he liked. He turned to the man and offered his hand. "I'm Gerard. I would REALLY like some guidance here.. "Jacques got up and came and shook the hand that was offered, he sat down next to Gerard on his left.
"I've had a long trip home and I am exhausted. And everything on this menu sounds great. If it's all as good as Anna's coffee-"
"OH it is!" the man interjected.
"Then how will I be able to decide?..I can't decide."
"If you want something fast..Try one of her omelettes or scrambled eggs. She gets them perfectly light and fluffy."
"Actually a plate of scrambled eggs sounds really good right about now.."
"Anna make him that kitchen sink kind you make!"
"Kitchen sink?"
"Yeah she throws in all sorts of spices and vegetables and every thing else she's got EXCEPT the kitchen sink.."
Gerard laughed finally starting to relax.
"That sounds great!"Anna smiled at them.
"Two then?"
"Yes please!" Both men answered eagerly.
Anna stopped and topped off both their coffee cups and then set about to gather things for her concoction.
The two men sat and talked about where Gerard had been and what he had seen in Europe. The other man nodded occasionally. He added in a few times things he had remembered from the time he was in the "old country".
"I fought in The Great WAR...We Never thought it would happen again my boy.. We thought it would be the WAR to END ALL WARS...I am so sorry you young people are having to live through this again." Gerard looked at the man closely, he couldn't have been more than a a dozen years older that Gerard. "I enlisted Very young. No one much cared how old I was..I lied and they chose to believe it..They wanted bodies for their war..They always do..."
Just as Gerard was about to ask him how that was possible, when he suddenly smelled something..
"Oh...What IS that? That smells WONDERFUL.."
"THAT soldier, is our meal!"
Anna brought out two plates full of hot steaming eggs. The portions were piled high. She had mixed in chopped green onions and what looked to have been mushrooms. There was also tiny red bits of bacon. This was a REAL treat! Gerard could also taste some spices but other that the obvious black pepper he wasn't sure what they were. Anna stood there expectantly as he took his first mouthful, waiting for and watching his reaction.
"Ohhhh Jacques my good man you WERE RIGHT!! Anna this is DELICIOUS!" Gerard then took one quick sip of his coffee and then proceeded to start eating with gusto. He hadn't tasted anything this good since he couldn't remember when.. Gerard knew he'd probably never say it outloud, but he thought this was better than his Ma's cooking. Maybe better, even than Grandma's.
He couldn't be sure about Jocelyn's she had never bothered to cook for him. In the last week he had been home that they were married before he shipped out they either dined out, or were out some where at some party or function were there was food. And IF Jos and he were in the apartment, they were doing other things..
The only thing Jos thought the kitchen table was for, had Nothing to do with food.
He tried to push her out of his thoughts again. He frowned.
Anna noticed right away.
"Somesing wrong Sergeant?"
"oh ..oh no, not with the food anyway.." he looked down at his more than half emptied plate.."No the food is delicious..Could..could I have a second helping?" he asked with an impish grin.
That brought a smile back to Anna's face.
"Of course I will bring you more. Jacques would like more as well?"
"oh I..I don't want to take advantage."
"You are not. You are helping me. Let me know if I do not hear the bell."
The two of them sat there, savouring the hot STRONG coffee. As Anna went back to start cooking again.
"She's a very sweet girl you know. I owe her father my life.. We fought against the kaiser's forces. He saved me more than once...what's wrong soldier..something is bothering you. I can tell."
"It's just..Why couldn't I have found someone like her..She'd be worth fighting for..Worth coming home to."
The bell rang behind them.
"Not like the ..tramp I Am married to....or I guess I should say was, since I signed the papers, that SHE had just WAITING for me to spring on me when I got home tomorrow."
Gerard felt a tap on his soldier he began to turn around,
"I say, is your name Way?"
"Yes sir It-"
WHAM!
Gerard saw the sucker punch coming just a moment before he felt it.
