There was an emptiness in Mikey's belly when he woke up.
It was the first thing he noticed, after the fact that it was still, without a doubt, very much before noon.
So he stumbled out of bed and through to the 'kitchen' area of the bus - a tiny little microwave oven and, of course, a toaster set on top of a tiny, normally empty, fridge.
He dug out his secret stash of non-hairy bread and shoved two slices into the toaster, mindful of the frequent occurrence that at least one of his band mates would wake up and would, inevitably, be hungry for non-hairy buttered toast.
Mikey was occupying himself with hopping from foot to foot as he waited for the toaster to do its thing. Now, Mikey took a great pride in his toaster, so it was only natural when he noticed a scuff on the side to pull a sleeve over his hand and set about polishing it, rubbing vigorously at the oddly Frank-shaped handprint.
Mikey was beginning to get frustrated - that damn fingermark would NOT shift!!! When suddenly, the toaster groaned...
Mikey jumped back from his beloved toaster, staring in wide-eyed fascination as it started to talk in a rusty, creaky voice.
"IIIIIIIII aaam theee geeeniiieee ooof theee toooaaasteeer...yooouuu maaayyy haaaveee threee wiiisheees, proooviiidiiing theeey aaareee ooof aaaa toooaaast baaaseeed naaatuuureee..."
"Uhmmm...umm...er-well, uh."
"Come on, I don't have all night you know!!!"
"Oh, er, okay, well then, can I have a nice big jar of peanut butter for my toast?"
There was a small *poof* and a jar of Mikey’s favourite chunky appeared beside the toaster.
"Cool!! Thanks Mr. Toaster Genie!"
"Call me Tom."
"Thanks Tom!"
"Dude, who are you talking to?"
Mikey spun around to see Frank in the doorway, tousle-haired and bleary eyed, wearing pyjama pants and nothing else.
"The Toaster Genie."
"Jeffery?"
"Umm...no. His name's Tom."
"Funny. He told me he was called Jeffery."
"Well, y'know, I'm called Tom Jeffery er, Toaster..."
"Oh, ok."
"Frank? Mikey? What are you doing up?" Gerard croaked, standing in the doorway.
"Gee! Remember the toaster Genie I told you 'bout? Well he's back!! Come see!"
"You mean Percival? Yeah, I met him the other night making some Strawberry-on-rye..."
"Percival? His name is Tom!!"
"No it’s not! It's Jeffery!"
"Guys? Why are you all fighting over the toaster?" Ray asked, stumbling in.
"We're not! We're fighting over his name!!"
"His? That is a female toaster, and her name is Maria!"
"HE is called Tom!"
"Jeffery."
"Percival!!!"
The debate escalated into a fight, with the four men arguing over the name of the toaster until the bus door vaguely slammed and Bob wandered through, perplexed as to what the commotion was.
"Guys, GUYS!!!!" The four other men stopped almost instantly to look round at Bob, scared of pissing him off...because he could beat their asses any day.
"What is wrong with you guys?? It's the middle of the night! You should all be like, asleep!"
"The toaster has been telling us all different names and-and we can't decide which is the right one!!" Frank whined, padding over to Bob and curling his fingers into the front of Bob's jacket and standing on tiptoes to peer into his eyes.
"He's called Jeffery, isn't he? Isn't he Bob?"
Bob looked perplexed for a moment before picking Frank up and holding him against his hip like a child, walking over to take a closer look at the toaster.
And then, like an episode of Batman with Adam West...
"This is no toaster." Bob muttered in horror, "This is Barry, the evil waffle iron!"
Suddenly the toaster shuddered and changed shape until it looked like it was indeed a waffle iron.
"Mwahahahahaaaaa!!!" It said in a deep voice, "You have finally discovered my true identity!! But it is too late, for I have already implemented my extremely evil plan to take over the world!!!!"
Bob shuddered as the iron began cackling again, and Frank reached over and unplugged it.
"Wh-what did he mean by his 'extremely evil plan'?" Frank asked Bob, hugging his arm and watching the evil waffle iron warily.
"Hmmm...I don't know..."
Bob prodded the iron curiously and it sprang to life, cackling and snapping at Bob's fingers even as he drew them away.
"If you thought your toast tasted strange, it was 'cause I pumped it full of mind-control serum!!! Ahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaaaaaa!!!!!!!! Get him!" The waffle iron shouted, "I said, get him! What's wrong with you??? You all ate food, toasted inside my fantastically versatile insides, why aren't you listening???"
"Well, actually, I dropped mine, jam side down." Gerard muttered sadly. "And then there was no more jam left and-we were moving and..." Gerard sniffled.
"Same here." Ray muttered, looking sorrowful as he wrapped an arm around Gerard's shoulders.
"I fed mine to Mister Buggles." Frank grinned. Mister Buggles was Frank's teddy.
"Eeeeeew Frank, just eeew. I can't believe you actually sleep with that thing! It's disgusting!"
"Shut up Gee."
Then, as if on cue, the teddy came lurching through and bit Mikey's leg.
"Ow!! What the--?" Mikey shook the bear off and picked it up by the neck, holding it away from his face with some difficulty.
"Mister Buggles!! No!"
The bear paused in its attempts to maul and turned to look at Frank, it's whole demeanour changing. It stopped trying to attack Mikey's face and seemed to whine, reaching desperately out for Frank, who moved to embrace his teddy until Bob caught him and held him back, telling him that the teddy was just pretending, it was still under the control of Barry and it only wanted to hurt him.
Frank growled a little and freed himself from Bob's grasp to grab lovingly at the scruffy teddy and hug it against his chest, giving the rest of the guys an I-told-you-so glare and yelping as the bear changed from gentle to vicious at a word from Barry.
"Frankie!!" Bob and Gerard squeaked in unison, hurrying forward to prize Frank away from the crazy teddy.
"Nobody messes with Mister Buggles." Frank said quietly, in a voice that made everyone draw away a little in fear. "Especially not some Waffle Iron who wants to be a toaster." And with that Frank grabbed Barry and held him shut as he pulled the window open and threw the Waffle iron out onto the verge between the lanes of the highway.
The assembled men heard only a vague shriek before Barry was gone, only a figment of their memories.
Apart from Mister Buggles, who was snarling in Bob's grip, apparently still under the spell of the Waffle Iron.
Frank tried to get to his teddy, held back by the Way brothers, until Ray spoke.
"Frank, I think...I think that Mister Buggles is ill...we'll have to put him down." Ray said quietly in mock sympathy for the other guitarist, removing the struggling soft toy from Bob's tight arms and tossing it the way of Barry.
"MISTER BUGGLES!!!!!!!" Frank screamed, rushing to the window as if he could somehow rescue the bear, Bob stepping forward at the same time as Mikey to comfort a distraught Frank, and hold him back from attacking Ray.
"It's alright Frank, he's in a better place now, he's happy, shhh..." Bob whispered as Mikey stroked his back, while Ray looked vaguely guilty and Gerard debated with himself whether it was too soon to start raiding the cupboards for food...

It wasn't long before things were back to normal, apart from Frank staying in a huge sulk for the rest of the month and Mikey suffering withdrawal symptoms from his beloved toast...and Gerard finding quite a few copies of Playgirl in the cupboards during his search for marmalade. Ray claimed it wasn't his. A lot. While Bob looked sheepish, and Frank finally laughed again...
